Lady Royals capture Hilton Classic

’Paupack graduates Roman, Mann lead Scranton to title.

Paced by 27 points from tournament MVP Alexix Roman, the University of Scranton women’s basketball team edged Stockton University, 75-69, in the title game of the Hilton Scranton Poinsettia Classic.

Bridget Mann made it a big day for two Wallenpaup­ack alumnae, scoring 15 points and earning her own all-tourney team berth.

Mann also dished out a career-best nine assists to help Lady Royals coach Trevor Woodruff earn his 200th win at the Division III level.

It was a big day for all five Scranton starters, with Mackenzie Yori adding 13 points, and Sarah Payonk and Dunmore grad Emily Sheehan each adding eight, including a pair of free throws in the final minute by Sheehan that helped send Stockton to just its second loss in 11 games.

Payonk also chimed in with seven assists as the Lady Royals shared the ball well, amassing 24 assists on 28 field goals.

Men

At San Juan, Puerto Rico, John Vitkus and Brandon Feinberg helped pace a big second-half run as the University of Scranton defeated Emory and Harris, 63-51, at Coliseo Roberto Clemente.

Each scored six during a 24-5 spurt to help Scranton improve to 9-2. Vitkus finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds, Mitch Cross scored 12 points and Feinberg finished with 10 points.
