Exeter native Brandon Matthews saw almost everything fall into place in Friday’s second round of the Tour qualifying tournament in Chandler, Arizona.

The former Pittston Area High School star made seven birdies, an eagle and two bogeys en route to a 7-under-par 65, which moves him to 8 under at the midway point of the 72-hole event at Whirlwind Golf Club. The leader is at 16-under par through two rounds.

Friday’s round came at the Devil’s Claw course, where Matthews got off quickly with birdies at Nos. 2 and 4, then poured in an eagle putt on the par-5 sixth. He followed with a birdie at No. 8 to reach 5 under for the day, but bogeyed the ninth and 11th before rattling off four birdies over the next five holes.

Thursday’s opening round at The Cattail saw Matthews make just one birdie and 17 pars, the most in any round since he turned professional last season.

Matthews is in 49th place. The winner at Q-school gets fully exempt status on the Tour for the 2019 regular season. Finishers in second through 10th are guaranteed entry into the first 12 events, while players in 11th through 40th are guaranteed to play the first eight events.

Those who finish outside the top 40 gets conditional status, which means they can play, based on order of finish, when spots are available.
