Temple upsets fifth-ranked Duke behind Wyatt’s 22 points

PHILADELPH­IA — Khalif Wyatt scored 22 points and Rahlir HollisJeff­erson had 17 to help Temple knock off No. 5 Duke 78-73 on Wednesday night.

Using tough man-to-man defense that limited Duke’s longrange shots, the Owls (10-3) grabbed the lead midway through the first half and never let it go. When the Blue Devils (12-2) crept within three points in the waning minutes, Wyatt hit consecutiv­e 3pointers for a 66-57 lead.

The Owls had lost nine straight times to Duke, and hadn’t beat the Blue Devils since Jan. 25, 1996. This decisive win in front of more than 20,000 fans gave the Owls wins over Top 10 teams for the fourth straight season, all in Philadelph­ia.

Mason Plumlee had 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Blue Devils.

Temple fans stormed the court in celebratio­n and lingered long after the final buzzer. No. 9 Georgetown 73, No. 20 Marquette 70 WASHINGTON — Jason Clark scored 26 points and Hollis Thompson’s tiebreakin­g 3-pointer with less than 30 seconds left capped a comeback from a 17-point deficit, helping Georgetown beat Marquette.

The Hoyas (13-1, 3-0 Big East) ran their winning streak to 11 games, their longest in five years. They got 16 points from Thompson, 13 from Henry Sims, and key contributi­ons from four freshmen who played significan­t minutes in the second half.

Marquette (12-3, 1-1) lost for the third time in five games, despite 18 points from Darius JohnsonOdo­m, 17 from Jae Crowder, and 16 from Todd Mayo.

The Golden Eagles led 43-29 at halftime and stretched that to 5639 on Mayo’s 3-pointer with 13:10 left. But Clark brought Georgetown back, making 6 of 7 shots in the second half, when he scored 18 points.

WOMEN No 2. Connecticu­t 79,

West Virginia 60 HARTFORD, Conn. — Bria Harley scored 18 points and Connecticu­t extended its Ncaa-record home winning streak to 93 games with a win over West Virginia.

Five players scored in double figures for Uconn (12-1, 2-0 Big East), which broke open a close game in the second half.

Kelly Faris had 14 points and six steals, Tiffany Hayes had 13 points, Kaleena Mosqueda-lewis added 12 and Caroline Doty chipped in 11.

Asya Bussey had 19 points and Christal Caldwell added 17 to lead West Virginia (10-4, 1-1), which has lost 24 straight games to Connecticu­t after winning the first contest between the two schools back in 1982.

It was the 44th consecutiv­e Big East win for Uconn and its 24th consecutiv­e win home openers. No. 3 Notre Dame 74,

Seton Hall 36 SOUTH ORANGE — Skylar Diggins scored 14 points and No. 3 Notre Dame cruised to a 74-36 win over Seton Hall on Wednesday night for its 11th straight victory.

Next up for the Irish is a showdown with second-ranked Connecticu­t in South Bend on Saturday.

Notre Dame (14-1, 2-0 Big East) has been sizzling on offense and leads the nation in scoring. The Irish came in averaging over 100 points in their previous four games, including a 128-42 thrashing of Mercer on Dec. 30.

Notre Dame kept it up against the Pirates (7-9, 0-2).

The Irish closed the first half with a 36-9 run, with their three stars — Diggins, Natalie Novosel and Devereaux Peters — combining for 22 points during the burst.
