Dileo officially takes over as Sixers’ GM

PHILADELPH­IA — Tony DiLeo had held about every position with the 76ers for more than two decades.

He can officially add general manager to that list.

DiLeo was introduced Monday as the new GM and he says he has the experience and ideas that can make the Sixers winners in the East. He’ll work alongside team president Rod Thorn.

Ownership had lauded DiLeo for his role in landing All-Star center Andrew Bynum from the Los Angeles Lakers.

AUTO RACING Furniture Row hires Kurt Busch DENVER — Furniture Row Racing has hired Kurt Busch to drive for the Coloradoba­sed team in 2013.

Busch will replace Regan Smith in the No. 78 Chevrolet.

Busch was the 2004 NASCAR champion, but he split with Penske Racing at the end of last season because of his many offtrack incidents. He spent this season driving for Phoenix Racing in the Sprint Cup series and his brother’s Kyle Busch Motorsport­s in the Nationwide Series, where he won twice. Barrichell­o to drive in stock car race SAO PAULO — Former Formula One driver Rubens Barrichell­o says he will participat­e in a stock car race in Brazil in December.

The Brazilian, who finished 12th in his first IndyCar season, reached a deal with a local team to drive in the final race of the year at the Interlagos track on Dec. 9.

Barrichell­o will earn more than $100,000 for competing but will donate the money to charity.

SOCCER FIFA makes Club World Cup draw ZURICH — Mexico’s Monterrey will play the Asian champion for a chance to face Chelsea at the Club World Cup.

Copa Libertador­es champion Corinthian­s of Brazil is in the other half of the draw.

The tournament, to be played from Dec. 6-16 in Japan, involves six continenta­l champions plus the host country’s league winner. Chelsea and Corinthian­s get byes to the semifinals.

Dynamo Kiev fires coach KIEV, Ukraine — Dynamo Kiev says it has fired its coach Yuri Semin, a day after a cup loss to archrival Shakhtar Donetsk.

Club spokesman Olexiy Semenenko said Monday that a replacemen­t for Semin will be announced before the team’s practice on Tuesday.

Bradley returns to training American midfielder Michael Bradley has resumed training with AS Roma after a thigh injury that sidelined him for nearly a month.

Bradley participat­ed in Monday’s practice session, the team said on its website.

BASEBALL Canada pounds Germany

REGENSBURG, Germany — Canada qualified for next year’s World Baseball Classic, routing Germany 11-1 in their qualifying final.

Chris Robinson homered in the first and Adam Loewen in the second as the visitors built a 7-0 lead.

Jimmy Van Ostrand homered in the fourth, and Germany’s Aaron Altherr connected in the fifth to cut the host’s deficit to 8-1.

The game ended in the eighth because of the rout rule.

TENNIS Bartoli advances TOKYO — Marion Bartoli advanced to the second round of the Pan Pacific Open with a 6-1, 6-4 win over local favorite Kimiko Date-Krumm, who had to deal with the distractio­n of a rowdy fan.

After dominating the first set, the ninthseede­d Bartoli faced a tougher challenge as Date-Krumm rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the second set.

“Playing her in Japan is a tough challenge,” Bartoli said. “I expected her to fight to the end. I knew she would make a comeback in the second set and she did but that forced me to stay focused.”

Petzschner triumphs BANGKOK — Philipp Petzschner advanced to the second round of the Thailand Open by beating Peerakiat Siriluetha­iwattana 6-1, 6-2.

The 107th-ranked Petzschner took less than an hour to win the only singles match of the day.

The four top-seeded players — Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia, Richard Gasquet of France, Milos Raonic of Canada and Gilles Simon of France — received byes in the first round.

Sijsling, Wang win KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Igor Sijsling of the Netherland­s and Jimmy Wang of Taiwan each won to advance to the second round of the Malaysian Open.

Sijsling needed only 50 minutes to beat Malaysia’s top-ranked player Ariez Elyaas Deen Heshaam 6-2, 6-1 at Kuala Lumpur’s Putra Stadium. He will face either Feliciano Lopez or Lukas Lacko of Slovakia in the second round.

Wang beat Riccardo Ghedin of Italy 6-3, 6-3, maintainin­g his strong play during a year in which he qualified for the main draw at Wimbledon and reached the second round at the U.S. Open.

VOLLEYBALL Gold medalist was pregnant NEW YORK — Kerri Walsh Jennings says she was pregnant when she won her third beach volleyball gold medal.

Walsh Jennings said on NBC’s “Today” show Monday she is 11 weeks pregnant. That means she was already expecting her third child when she and Misty MayTreanor won the Olympic gold medal in London on Aug. 8.
