Holocaust center sets two events
WEST WINDSOR — The Mercer County Holocaust/ Genocide Resource Center will host two special events in October, beginning with an Oct. 3 appearance by Nuran Nabi, a community rights activist and freedom fighter.
In his 4:30 p.m. talk, Nabi will discuss his experiences living through the tumultuous era of the Bangladesh liberation movement and the liberation war of 1971, according to a news release.
Nabi will discuss his journey to becoming a politically conscious student activist, and then a freedom fighter in the Bangladesh Liberation War. He also will discuss his book, “Bullets of ’71: A Freedom Fighter’s Story,” which illustrates how the selfish decisions of a few world leaders led to millions of crimes against humanity.
The second event, a workshop entitled “OUCH! Your Silence Hurts,” will be held on Thursday, Oct. 11, at 4:30 p.m. in the Holocaust/Genocide Resource Center, which is located at Mercer County Community College.
The workshop asks the question: Do you ever stand by silently when you feel you should speak up? Many people say they want to speak up when they see others stereotyped, disrespected or demeaned, but they stand by silently because of discomfort or fear of saying the wrong thing. That silence hurts because it allows the disrespectful behavior to continue.
This workshop will challenge participants to consider how to respond the next time they are treated with disrespect or witness disrespectful behaviors towards others It will explore the power of the bystander to make a difference and inspire them to use their voice as active allies.
Participation in the workshop is limited and registration is necessary. More information is available by calling 609-570-3355. The Holocaust-Genocide Resource Center is located on Mercer’s West Windsor Campus, 1200 Old Trenton Road, on the second floor of the Library building.
