Pennsbury faces a defining test against Council Rock South

When the Neshaminy football team suffered a stunning loss to William Tennent on the last play of the game last week, it did more than at least temporarily come back to the rest of the Suburban One National League pack.

It also vaulted hatedrival Pennsbury into the position as the favorite in the SONL race. This is the week when we will begin to find out if Pennsbury can handle the pressure or if it’s going to be one of those years where parity reigns supreme.

Council Rock South (0-4) at Pennsbury (2-2), tonight, 7 p.m. — A year ago this was one of the biggest games of the year, with Pennsbury barely prevailing in a collision of playoff-bound teams that ended in a monsoon. Obviously, it’s a much different story this time around for Rock South, which has been outscored by a staggering 142-48 in its four losses. Rock South has the size and strength to stand up to Pennsbury’s power running game, but will be hard pressed to slow down the likes of Shawn Pepper and Chuck Snorweah on the flanks. Nobody has a deeper backfield than the Falcons, who have added yet another running threat in sophomore transfer quarterback Breon Clark. Pennsbury also has a very active defense, making Rock South a definite underdog tonight.

Neshaminy (2-2) at Truman (2-2), tonight, 7 p.m. — It’s hard to believe the Redskins lost to William Tennent last week, but the thing to remember is their offense really hasn’t consistently clicked all year. While it’s true the Redskins have a veteran and proven defense, unlike last year it isn’t getting much help from the offense in terms of staying off the field. Truman’s 52-2 loss to Pennsbury last week revealed how undermanned the scrappy Tigers often remain against SONL competition. This will be tough for the home team. Not only is Neshaminy looking to get untracked, but its depth and size are sure to pay dividends as the game goes along.

Bensalem (2-2) at Abington (3-1), tonight, 7 p.m. — This has the potential to be the best game of the night. The Owls are coming off a solid win over Council Rock South in which they more or less locked it up in the first half. Abington posted a tight home win over Rock North last week. The winner of this game will be in a solid position to possibly make a run for a league title and playoff berth. Abington largely relies on speed and Bensalem should be able to hold its own in that department. This is all about execution and which team has the fewest turnovers.

William Tennent (2-2) at Council Rock North (13), tonight, 7 p.m. — Confidence has to be high with the Panthers after the Neshaminy win. Rock North knows it has to have this game or it will be in big trouble on the SONL front. Any playoff hopes will also be in deep jeopardy. Go with the Indians. In addition to finally playing at home following four road games, Rock North will be well aware it can’t look past Tennent after what happened last week.

Morrisville (1-3) at New Church (1-2), tomorrow, 1:30 — The Dawgs have been shut out the last two weeks after the heartbreaking loss to New Hope. The Church Boys own a win over Olney and just played Lower Moreland tough. The other ANC loss was to Springfield (Montco). Look for Mo’ville to end zone the scoring drought, but its defense will be hard pressed to hold up for four quarters.

Archbishop Carroll (1-3) at Conwell-Egan (3-0), tomorrow, 7 p.m. — Although they have not played a stellar schedule, the Eagles’ undefeated start has been one of the real feelgood stories of the season. Look for it to continue for one more week. Carroll is by far the toughest team Conwell-Egan will have played, but it has virtually no running game and it’s only win was over a bad Radnor team.
