EWING — Take away those three one-goal losses and you might be lookng at a Colonial Valley Conference Patriot Division girls soccer race with Ewing at the top of the list.

Mike Reynolds’ Blue Devils have been among the CVC’s more unluckier sides, with narrow losses to West Windsor North, Hightstown and an overtime loss to Steinert.

Thursday, the Blue Devils finally got some good fortune when Morgan Brady controlled a loose ball at the top of the 18-yard box, dribbled a few yards at goalie Selina Medina and fired in the game-winner at 2:07 of the second sudden-death overtime to earn Ewing a 2-1 win over West Windsor South.

Brady’s second goal came when teammate Nicolette Towlen got tackled on her run toward the goal but pushed the ball to her left to Brady, who did the rest to earn 3-4-0 Ewing the golden goal win.

“We’re scoring enough, we’ve just had some stretches of bad luck,” Reynolds pointed out. “We’ve been in every game and certainly could have won any of them (losses).

“Tonight, we were a little sloppy at times and maybe rushing too much. The precision (on passes) wasn’t there tonight, and that has been part of the problem. I think we’re fine. We’re 3-4 and now we have to take care of Saturday (an 11 a.m. game at Hamilton).”

Afer Brady scored from a corner kick in the first half, the Pirates equalized a minute later when Lindsey Philbin found the back of the net.

With their best offensive player and midfield maestro Brittain Dearden away on a college recruiting trip to Brigham Young that will force her to miss two matches, the 1-2-2 Pirates had a good share of the possession from 18 to 18, but lacked a finish to their runs.

“We have our moments, but when we do connect our passes some times we panic and kick the ball away,” said Pirates coach Chris Miller.

The Pirates did a lot of that, as both teams marked tight in the midfield and kept the pressure building. Ewing had several dangerous opportunties in the second half and first OT before making good on a winning combination from Towlen to Brady.
