Setting the stage for the city’s Third Annual Trenton African-American Pride Festival next week, the Youth Sports Expo was held at Cadwalader Park Saturday. Locals were entertained with demonstrations and pickup games of basketball, tennis and boxing, along with many other free sports related activities.

“It was a very pleasant non-violent event. It was safe, just a nice family day” said city resident Beverly Harrington.

Christine Patterson agreed, “It was well put together and I’m very proud of Trenton today.”

Softball coach Cleveland Thompson, whose team West End LL finished in third place in the 2013 state finals played against Monroe township, said “The girls really enjoyed playing. Seeing them get better year after year is what this is really about.”

“Today was very inspirational, they played oldies and had a very family reunion-like ambience,” said Kenyar Rittenburg.

The Block vs. Boardroom Basketball Tournament was one of the most popular events. The event was named after local author Tracy Syphax’ book of the same name. Players ages 18 and up participated in five-on-five basketball games to raise funds for the Mind Our Business ( MOB) program, which helps local entrepreneurs start their own small businesses.

Free T-shirts and water were handed out and face-painting was offered to the younger attendees.

“Today’s sports events were successful. Everyone was peaceful and there was no chaos,” said Darlene McKnight, a Trenton resident for the past 47 years.

The TAAPF will take place next Saturday, Aug. 17, at Cadwalader Park from noon to 6 p.m. Last year’s festival attracted 7,000 guests. An after party will be held from 9 p.m. top 2 a.m. at Lafayette Yard Hotel hosted by WDAS radio talk show host Patty Jackson. Cost at the door will be $15.
