Plainsboro man accused of gun trafficking in Trenton
TRENTON >> A convicted felon is accused of trafficking weapons in the capital city, prosecutors said.
Anthony J. Gaylord, 35, of Plainsboro, is charged with a half-dozen counts of weapons offenses for allegedly selling high-capacity assault rifles and guns to confidential informants on two occasions, prosecutors said at a bail hearing Thursday.
The investigation was conducted by New Jersey State Police, Assistant Prosecutor Tim Ward said. He did not have much information because of a barebones probable cause affidavit that gave a skeletal outline of the charges lodged against Gaylord.
Ward couldn’t say if the investigation netted more defendants or if Gaylord was allegedly a lone wolf.
There was also some confusion in court about when the alleged undercover buys took place. The probable cause affidavit said two buys were conducted on Feb. 3, 2015 and Feb. 6, 2016.
Jenna Casper, Galyord’s attorney, questioned why authorities waited a more than a year from the date of the alleged buys to arrest and charge her client. Judge Pedro Jimenez pointed to the latter date from this year saying he believed the date of the first buy may have been a typo.
That was about as juicy as it got in for Gaylord, who was originally being held on $750,000 bail. Jimenez said the bail was outlandishly high and shaved it down to $75,000, despite Gaylord’s past convictions, including a prior weapons offense from 2003. He received three years in prison on that charge but served only 180 days, according to online court records.
