A 91-year-old Ewing Twp. woman beaten badly and left for dead inside her basement died last weekend after suffering a heart attack inside the St. Lawrence Rehabilitation Center.

Doris Mae “Gigi” Geisel passed away and now it’s even more important that law enforcement officers apprehend the second suspect connected to this heinous crime.

Maybe they did not beat her to death but these cruel men beat her toward demise. The early April attack left Geisel with a skull fracture, broken ribs and facial injuries.

Geisel never returned to the home she had manicured with her predeceased husband, John, although friends said she had planned to get back there despite concerns about her safety.

Geisel loved to bake, cook and tinker while an obituary noted an extended list of people who loved her deeply. Weeks ago, a friend had told me about her plans and my heart hoped that she could make it home and live out her life without this bad memory.

These times are when God wrestles me about why. Why Mrs. Geisel?

Sure, there’s disappointment that this story did not turn out better, that Gigi never made it back to a special sun spot on her lawn or to have coffee or tea with her many loving friends. This is not about revenge but the young men who started this human slide of life deserve every bit of justice waiting for them.

The two thugs, one of them Joseph Blanche, arrested and charged with first-degree kidnapping and robbery, aggravated assault, theft and endangering an injured victim, should be placed behind bars for an extended time.

“Yes, every member of this force wants to make the arrest of the second suspect,” said Det. Nick Muscente.

A family friend said the invaders made off with about forty dollars, a minimal amount of jewelry and Geisel’s old car. Not to give ideas to any of these incredibly violent and stupid criminals but they could rob banks where there is guaranteed money and do less time if police apprehend them.

Think about this. Rob the bank without using a gun, Walk off with at least $5,000, Party all night long with booze, women and drugs. Even if they get caught it’s not the amount of time they’re looking at for beating up Mrs. Geisel.

The clearance rate for bank robbery in the U.S. is about 60 percent. Perform this act without a gun and with no physical harm to employees may get the perpetrator ten years in a federal penitentiary. Blanche and his alleged accomplice will serve at least that amount of time without their bank robbery after party.

Right now, bankers are screaming about this bank robbery suggestion but Geisel friends and family should have never faced this pain and suffering.

Apparently, Geisel had membership in her girly “Breakfast Club” and shopped regularly at Marazzo’s Market in Ewing. A friend wrote that “(Geisel) was a selfless woman who gave to all in need no matter what it was!”

As six degrees of separation would allow, the Geisel family and I shared a special friend in a young woman named Beth who resides with her family in Florida.

Beth wrote, “How sad we are to hear of Doris’ passing. She was always our favorite Breakfast Club member. She was such a loving and warm person and I am certain that all of your family has a brand new angel watching out for you. All of our love ..... ”

To the Geisel family and all of Doris’ friends, the hope here is that your hearts hurt as much as they should and love as much as they can.
