Robert V. (Soup) Campbell, Sr., 93, of Ewing, NJ passed away on September 19, 2016 at Morris Hall St. Joseph’s Long Term Care in Lawrencevi­lle, N.J.

Predecease­d by his parents, Rose and John Campbell Sr, his brothers Jack and Paul (his twin); Robert is survived by his wife of 69 years Eileen (O’Brien); two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert V. Jr. and Amy Campbell, and their children, Kaylin and Kyle of Lambertvil­le NJ; and Jeffrey and Micaela Campbell, and their daughter, Darby of Monmouth Beach, NJ; two sisters and a brother-inlaw, Rosemarie Bruno of Ponce Inlet, FL, and Joan and Bill Murphy of Toms River, NJ; sister-in-law, Melina Campbell of Arlington, VA; as well as 9 nieces and nephews.

Born and raised in Trenton, NJ, Robert graduated from Trenton Catholic Boys High School in 1942 where he played both football and basketball. After graduating, he enlisted in the United States Navy and is a veteran of both World War II and the Korean conflict. He was a Radioman 1st Class on the USS Wesson (DE-184). Robert received nine medals and other ribbons for his Navy service. Upon his discharge, he attended Rider College and was employed by the State of New Jersey, Department of Taxation for the Bureau of Inheritanc­e Tax. He retired after 30 years as a Bureau Chief.

Robert was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, and for a number of years, was the Commander for the Trenton Chapter. He was a member of the Ewing Kiwanis (and was a past President) and the Ewing Twp. Elks. Robert was also a member of the Ewing Twp. F.O.P. and the Trenton Catholic High School Golden Wave Alumini Associatio­n. He was a recipient of the Father Clarence O’Shea “Tough Guy” award. A parishione­r of Blessed Sacrament Parish Trenton, NJ, he was a member of the Holy Name Society and the Commission­er and founder of the Blessed Sacrament Biddy Basketball League.

Visitation will be held on Thursday September 22, 2016, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the M. William Murphy Funeral Home, 935 Parkway Ave, Ewing, NJ. 08618. Words of Remembranc­e will be delivered at 9:45 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, September 23, 2016 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Counsel Church, 137 West Upper Ferry Road, West Trenton, NJ 08628. Interment with military honors will follow at Ewing Cemetery, 78 Scotch Rd, Ewing, NJ.
