Conwell-Egan, Bristol off to promising starts
Although it has been a patchy start for the majority of the Lower Bucks County football teams that compete in the Suburban One National League, two other teams have shown promising signs.
One is Conwell-Egan, which just beat West Catholic for the first time since 2006 and for just the fifth time in 23 meetings against the Burrs. The Eagles also have an excellent chance to improve to 3-1 tomorrow night before swinging into the brunt of their Philadelphia Catholic League schedule.
The other is Bristol. The Warriors only loss was a close one to Pennington and they seem to have a much more potent offense this year. If they can find a way to top New Hope tonight, they really will be in a good position for a successful season. NESHAMINY (4-0) AT TRUMAN (1-3), TONIGHT, 7 P.M >> The Redskins are currently on such a higher level than everyone else in Lower Bucks it’s not even close. Last week Neshaminy trounced Council Rock North, 45-7, by continuing to pile up the yardage with Mason Jones throwing for 145 yards and two touchdowns, and Will Dogba rushing for over 100 again. Truman, by contrast, scored just six points against Council Rock South, which had struggled on defense until last week. The trick for Neshaminy prior to the playoffs is to not get complacent and read its much-deserved positive press clippings. BENSALEM (2-2) AT CENTRAL BUCKS WEST (3-1), TONIGHT, 7 P.M. >> The good news for the Owls is their victory total is now up to two after they were awarded a forfeit win against Abraham Lincoln from week three. Picking up win No. 3 tonight in Doylestown will be difficult. C.B. West is coming off a loss to North Penn, but it did score three touchdowns against the powerhouse Knights. The Bucks’ Joshua Crecca is an accurate passer and the team comes at you with a variety of running backs. NEW HOPE (3-0) AT BRISTOL (2-1), TONIGHT, 7 P.M. >> This has the potential to be a very good game. New Hope comes in undefeated and has outscored its three opponents, 13124. It has a balanced offense with quarterback Nick Garritano, and running backs Jack McDonald and Brendan Shindle. The Warriors have also been moving the ball. In last week’s win over George, Bristol put 47 points on the board with Eric Bell rushing for over 140 yards and three touchdowns. Good looking quarterback Parker Kelley threw three TD passes. This is clearly one of the bigger games of the year in the Bicentennial Athletic League. COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH (1-3) AT ABINGTON (2-2), TONIGHT, 7 P.M. >> Rock South broke through last week in a 12-6 win over Truman in a game in which sophomore Chase Patterson burst on the scene with over 200 rushing yards on 27 carries and two touchdowns. This will be a much tougher task. Abington has won two in a row and has played strong defense throughout the year. To date, the Ghosts have yielded just 31 points in four games. The good things for the Hawks is Abington is not exactly a potent scoring machine itself. MORRISVILLE (1-3) AT VALLEY FORGE (1-2), TONIGHT, 3:30 P.M. >> Mo’ville is coming off its first win of the year after a 13-0 victory over Lower Moreland. Ditto for Valley Forge, which shut out Delco Christian, 24-0. Zeek Kershaw ran for over 100 last week as Morrisville ended a BAL losing streak that dated way back to 2012. Priority No. 1 for Morrisville is slowing down Valley Forge running back and Temple recruit Audley Isaacs. SCHUYKILL VALLEY (0-4) AT CONWELL-EGAN (2-1), TOMORROW, 7 P.M. >> Things are shaping up very nicely for the Eagles after it ended a long losing streak against West Catholic with a 28-6 win last week. In that game, Conwell-Egan took advantage of six turnovers and featured a balanced running game. Schuykill Valley is out of District 3 and although it is 0-4, two of its losses were by one point and another was by six. Still, it has yet to score more than 14 points in a game and will be hard pressed to slow down the surging Eagles. PENNSBURY (2-2) AT COUNCIL ROCK NORTH (0-3), TOMORROW, 1:30 P.M. >> Although the Falcons ended a twogame losing streak last week, the offense once again struggled in a 21-6 triumph over winless William Tennent in which it scored its first touchdown since opening night. Nasan Robbins led the way with 86 rushing yards. If Pennsbury can’t get its offense untracked here, it will be particularly frustrating. Rock North has given up 132 points in just three games and has been overmatched on both sides of the ball.
