Fires: Officials are investigating a fire that ignited inside a vacant home on Walklett’s Alley, and they believe it may have been arson. Officials say the fire originated on a mattress in a second-floor bedroom of the abandoned home, and that it appears someone intentionally started the blaze. The fire extended into an attached occupied home, and the man who lives there told officials he’s had problems with vagrants in the past. The man said he often sees prostitution and drug activity in the rear of the abandoned home, and that he’s told vagrants to leave the property on numerous occasions. Officials are investigating whether the fire was retaliation against the man for kicking them out of the vacant house. Officials say surveillance cameras recorded five people behind the man’s house moments before the fire was reported early Sunday morning. Officials also battled a fire on Tyler Street that originated from careless cooking Sunday afternoon. Officials say occupants of the home panicked when they saw smoke in the house and accidently locked the door on their way out after leaving a cooking pot on the stove. No injuries were reported in either fire.
