TRENTON >> A city man is fine with spending five years in prison for shooting his father in the back after they apparently quarreled over a debt.

Prosecutors want the alleged shooter sent away for 15 years.

That is the gulf between Assistant Prosecutor Tim Ward and the attorney for Faqiyr Ford, who is accused of blasting his father in the back in May 2015.

The victim’s sister shows up to court for her brother because he is permanently debilitated from the gunshot wound.

Ford’s former attorney claimed at a bail hearing last year the man had taken back allegations that his son shot him on the 200 block of Fulton Street on May 15, 2015, apparently following a heated confrontation.

Ford’s father was shot twice, and one of the bullets was removed from his spinal canal, prosecutors said at a bail hearing.

Prosecutors said at Monday’s status hearing that the victim has not recanted the allegations against his son. And they plan to consult him about public defender Jessica Lyons’ proposed counter offer, which would have Ford plead guilty to aggravated assault.

They would ask a judge to send him to prison for 5 years at sentencing, in part because he has no prior criminal record.

Ward still has to get approval from his bosses prior to accepting the deal.

Ford, who is free on $100,000 and showed up to court from the streets, was charged with attempted murder and weapons offenses after allegedly shooting his father with an unrecovered .22-caliber gun.

His next court appearance is in November.
