PRINCETON >> U.S. military members were out in force yesterday as TPC Jasna Polana hosted an annual “Birdies for the Brave” golf outing.

The PGA golf-supported initiative raises funds to support military members and their families but it places civilians in proximity to look deeply into the eyes of men and women who guard this nation’s interests.

Participants included people from all walks of life who understand and show appreciation for the contributions made by men and women service members.

Tony Tysenn, 61, a West Windsor construction worker, made his way to the TPC Jasna Polana putting green but stopped to acknowledge a group of New Jersey National Guard members. Tysenn’s hand shake with each soldier included a genuine thank you.

“No, I’m not a vet but I do have a role in a World War II reenactment group. That’s a lot different than the real thing,” Tysenn added. “My thanks extend not only to the veterans and soldiers but also to their families. It’s tremendous what they do for our country.”

“We had a picture perfect day to host such a special event, and we are proud to continue our tradition for supporting those who selflessly put their lives on the line every day to keep America safe and free,” said TPC Jasna Polana General Manager and Golf Director, Chad Fleming.

“The support we receive from our sponsors, members, military partnerships and local community/golfers enables TPC Jasna Polana to host a great day of golf for an outstanding cause.”

TPC Jasna Polana has hosted Birdies for the Brave events for more than a decade.

Birdies for the Brave includes a wide variety of military outreach and appreciation activities during PGA TOUR events, as well as a series of fundraising events conducted at the PGA TOUR’s Tournament Players Clubs (TPCs) and partner courses across the nation.

According to the organization’s website, the Birdies for the Brave effort has raised more than $17 million for non-profit military homefront groups that are supported by PGA TOUR players, which provide direct support to military members, veterans, and their families ranging from financial aid, rehabilitation services, counseling and housing to educational scholarships and career development.

“It’s amazing what our military men and women do for us,” Cooney praised. “I don’t care where I am, on the golf course, supermarket, airport, I always make certain that I give a word of gratitude to them for their service. They allow us to enjoy a lot of days like this.” Tony Tysenn (c) of West Windsor, N.J. posed with (l-r) National Guard members Command Sgt. Major Edward Santiago, Lt. Col.
