Split Decision: What game show would Christie host?

- Jeff Edelstein Columnist Jeff Edelstein is a columnist for The Trentonian.

Chris Christie continues to circle the drain, and last week, during the Bridgegate trial, we found out he once snapped at Bridget Kelly, asking her if she thought he was a “f------ game show host” after she advised him to introduce people at an event after a fire at Seaside.

Now, obviously, the answer is “no, Chris Christie, you are not a game show host,” though actually, now that I think about it, he’d probably make a good Simon Cowell-like meanie on an “American Idol”-type program.

But the better analogy is none other than Monty Hall of “Let’s Make a Deal,” at least the “Let’s Make a Deal” as I remember it.

Dig it: The original show went off the air in 1977 but lived on in syndication. I can distinctly remember it airing on WOR, channel 9, at around 1 or 1:30 in the afternoon, and it was the low point of my sick days home from school.

Not that it wasn’t a good show - but it was dated. (BTW, childhood sick days started at 9 a.m. with “I Love Lucy” reruns on channel 5, “Sale of the Century” and “Card Sharks” on NBC, “Price is Right” - obviously - on CBS, then usually an “Odd Couple” on WPIX. By the time 1 p.m. hit, we’re in soap opera territory, and I’m at the whim of WOR until cartoons at 3 p.m. Now that you have all this for background …)

Christie is like evil Monty Hall. Switch out the checkered blazer for a fleece and it all fits. In fact, not only is he playing Monty Hall, he’s also a contestant. Constantly trying to wheel and deal his way to bigger and better things. And in the end, when it’s all said and done, after eight years of missteps as governor and a failed presidential bid, after Bridgegate and gas tax hikes, after his bromance with Jerry Jones and Donald Trump and countless other bigwigs, Christie ends up finally choosing Door Number Two and he gets to take home

… a donkey.
