Maryland men with violent pasts arrested in East Windsor
TRENTON >> Two men who faced attempted murder charges in their home state of Maryland were arrested after they asked a police officer for a ride when they were found hitchhiking along the highway in East Windsor.
Edmond Scott, and Antonio Bowens, both 28 and of Baltimore, told police they were with a female companion Oct. 23, when they got turned away from a hotel party, prosecutors said at a bail hearing Tuesday.
They left to go to a bar and got stopped by a police officer for trying to hitch a ride along Route 130 in East Windsor.
Bowens had been convicted of aggravated assault in Maryland, prosecutors said, and was armed when he was taken into custody.
Scott, Bowens’ brother, was wanted in Maryland on an attempted murder charge at the time he was arrested, prosecutors said.
But Scott’s attorney Kathleen RedpathPerez said he resolved the attempted murder case years ago by pleading guilty to a lesser charge of aggravated assault. He was put on probation.
Maryland court records appear to back that up, though prosecutors said Baltimore officials have asked that Scott remain detained if he posts bail in New Jersey. They want him extradited back to Maryland for reasons that remain unclear.
Both men were being held in the Garden State on $250,000 bail.
A judge sliced bail to $2,500 for Scott, who was charged with less serious offense of with obstruction, hindering, escape and resisting arrest.
