GPS in stolen vehicle leads police to drug arrests >>
TRENTON >> An SUV owner’s GPS led them to believe their stolen vehicle was in the capital city, but police recovered more than they expected.
Officials say detectives from the Violent Crimes Unit were sent to find the vehicle Monday after the owner of a Dodge Durango that was stolen out of Jackson contacted law enforcement. The owner of the SUV told cops the GPS unit indicated the vehicle was in the area of Barnt Avenue and Smith Street.
When detectives arrived at the location, they found the SUV unoccupied, so they set up a surveillance in hopes of catching the suspect who was in possession of the vehicle.
Around 2:15 p.m., two males identified as Anthony Bryant, 19, and David Chapman, 21, walked toward the Durango. Officials say Bryant used a set of keys to remotely unlock the vehicle, which activated the SUV’s headlights.
Bryant and Chapman then stood next to the Durango’s windshield for a short period of time before walking toward a Pontiac Grand Am that was parked opposite the stolen SUV.
After the two men entered the Pontiac, police surrounded the car and removed Bryant from the vehicle because he possessed the keys to the stolen SUV. During his arrest, police smelled marijuana and then found drugs inside the Grand Am.
In total, police seized 114 decks of heroin, eight Oxycodone pills and a burnt marijuana cigarette from inside the Pontiac, which was also confiscated. Bryant also had marijuana in his pocket, according to police.
Bryant and Chapman are both charged with drug offenses. But Bryant is the only one charged with receiving stolen property.
