Letters to the editor Memorial Day

- — Commander Tommy H. Atkins, United States Navy (Retired)

Again this year as I arrive at the corner of Broad Street and Sunnybrae Boulevard on Monday, May, 29th for the start of the YardvilleGroveville Memorial Day Parade, I will remember. I will remember my early participation in the parade riding my bicycle. I knew it was the day of THE PARADE, to which individuals would wear some Red White and Blue (especially my Mom, Doris) and following the parade there would be family picnics. Basically, I remember it was a day that the community came together to enjoy. Only years later, did I realize we were enjoying these freedoms because of the sacrifices made by so many in defense of our way of life. Unfortunately, I now believe that most Americans consider Memorial Day to be a day to purchase anything from a car to a mattress at a special Memorial Day price.

This is the 147th year that a few civic minded individuals have organized the country’s 2nd oldest Memorial Day Parade and similarly civic minded local businesses and organizations have donated money to support the parade. This year’s parade will proceed via Broad to Route 156, thence to Broad, to Main, to Church and conclude with a service in the Groveville Cemetery.

I will remember that this is a day dedicated to the individuals who choose to serve their country for our continued freedom and in so doing, made the ultimate sacrifice. I will pause for 21 seconds in front of the churches that I pass to honor those individuals. I ask that you honor and show your support of our service personnel by attending the parade and reminding those around you to stand as I pass in front of with the American Flag.
