EWING » Edamiyon Doggett was a three-sport star at Ewing for four years, so it was only fitting he capped his high school career with an electric performance right down the road at The College of New Jersey.

In Thursday night’s Sunshine Football Classic at Lions Stadium, Doggett put on a show worthy of the MVP trophy as the winning West team’s quarterback.

The signal-caller completed 9-of-18 pass attempts for 109 yards, scrambled for key first downs, unloaded a pinpoint touchdown pass in the third quarter and was a constant playmaker in the All-Star exhibition featuring players from Mercer, Hunterdon and Burlington counties.

“It was nice coming out here again playing with some of my old friends and some of my new friends and just being able to have a good time and play ball,” Doggett said. “Once I got a couple plays in, I was good. I felt like I was home. I was not too far away (from Ewing High).”

It started right from the opening kickoff. Doggett engineered a 16-play, 80yard touchdown drive for West that consumed 9:10 off the clock. At the climax, Doggett completed a 22yard pass to West WindsorPlainsboro North’s Isaiah Miranda, setting up a fouryard touchdown run.

West’s second touchdown was a 21-yard lob from Doggett to Lawrence’s Tanner Adamcyzk. Adamcyzk, who was lined up out wide to the left, sprinted into the end zone and dove as he corralled Doggett’s meticulously accurate throw into a tight window between two defenders.

“I was just looking for one of my guys to make a play,” Doggett said. “It was a nice little fade (route). We set him up, and I just threw it up somewhere he could get it. He made a good play.”

Adamczyk, Miranda, WW-P North’s John Owens, North Hunterdon’s Jacob Berg and Ewing’s Tyquan Parker were among the targets for Doggett all night long.

Princeton’s Charlie Gallagher was the team’s offensive coordinator. Over the past week, Doggett worked in a unique offensive system that differed from Drew Besler’s at Ewing, but served as a taste of what’s to come when Doggett begins training camp Aug. 9 for Division III college football at Delaware Valley University in Doylestown, Pennsylvania.

“Mostly it was under center (formations),” Doggett said. “I’m used to spread and being in shotgun, but I got used to it as we practiced and the wide receivers were understanding where I was going to put it. The footwork is different, but it was nice because I’m going to need to use that for next year when I go to college.”

Before he does, he will cherish this one last proud moment as a Ewing student-athlete. Doggett quarterbacked the Blue Devils’ football program to a state playoff win last fall, was a starting guard on the boys basketball team’s run to the Group III state final in the winter and also ran track & field in the spring.

“You meet a lot of new people and see a lot more fans,” Doggett said. “You have a lot more support when they all know you’re from Ewing football, but then they see you on the basketball court. It’s a lot of having that little mojo. Everybody knows you. That was pretty cool.”
