Athletes are not worth the money for society

- L.A. Parker is a Trentonian columnist.

Capitalism runs our democracy which makes okay athletes’ ginormous salaries.

I mean, those are the rules.

However, at the end of the day, athletes as performers have minimal value in United States’ society.

Sure, they keep us entertained but so do animals at the local zoo. Choose, in terms of social value. Teacher with a successful acumen for influencing young minds or some basketball deity who can rain 3-point jumpers?

If the desire is to advance humanity then the obvious choice says to not only take the educator, nurse practitioner, scientist, farmer and social worker, but also to pay them salaries commensurate with their responsibility and ability.

Competent street sweepers, librarians, even crossing guards offer more value to society than athletes.

Sports salaries continue growing disparity between social classes as rich people gain more wealth.

People will justify Stephen Curry or James Harden receiving $40 millionplus NBA deals with accurate info that owners rake in much more.

Athletes rarely turn their dollars into thriving businesses that require employees.

Civilizations or great empires perish when people invest in misguided adventure and entertainment.

While we live in a wealthy nation, it’s unfathomable that approximately 45 million U.S. residents live in poverty.

In Trenton, imagine what this city would look like without organizations like the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen, Mercer Street Friends, Rescue Mission, Catholic Charities, etc.

Yet, these agencies that feed and offer shelter for challenged residents face financial hardships.

Perhaps Mssrs. Curry and Harden, Mike Trout, or other million-dollar babies could make a donation.
