Shooting at Cops: A grand jury has indicted Jeffrey Wass, 55, of Marlton, on weapons and aggravated assault charges for allegedly shooting at police earlier this year. Prosecutors say police were at Wass’ North Maple Avenue apartment for a well-being check on May 24 when the shooting happened. Cops and fire personnel were sent to the apartment after a maintenance worker who entered Wass’ apartment to investigate the odor of gas found him unconscious on the couch. The worker found the gas stove burners had been turned on, but were not lit. The worker turned off the burners, and PSE&G shut down gas and electric service to the entire building to prevent an explosion. Evesham police then established verbal contact with Wass from the doorway of his apartment, officials say, but Wass told cops not to enter. When several attempts to establish phone contact failed, a cop returned to Wass’ door and yelled inside, asking him to answer his phone. Wass responded by firing a gunshot inside the apartment, according to prosecutors in the case. After several unsuccessful attempts to re-initiate contact with Wass over the course of several hours, cops used a tactical robot to enter the home. Pictures transmitted by the robot showed that Wass was incapacitated on his sofa, so cops entered the apartment and arrested him. Police found a 9mm pistol inside the apartment when they searched it.
