Deadly Crash: A couple was killed following a twocar crash along Route 130 that sent their minivan over the guardrail and down an embankment, authorities said. The crash, involving 29-year-old Amish Patel, of Delanco and Robert Stephens, 52, of Burlington Township, happened in the jug handle of the northbound lane of the highway, the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office said in a news release. Stephens and his wife, Jane, 50, were killed after their minivan was struck while it was in the jug handle waiting to cross the highway onto Bridgeboro Road, authorities said. Authorities said Patel, who was traveling in a two-door sedan at an “excessive rate of speed” collided with the couple’s van around 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Patel entered the jug handle and lost control, slamming into the minivan which was propelled over the guardrail, slid down a steep hill and was submerged in a stretch of water connected to the Olympia Lakes, authorities said. So far, no charges have been filed while investigators determine whether Patel’s actions rise to the level of criminal, authorities said. Investigators are awaiting toxicology results of a blood draw taken from Patel after the crash. Patel could also cited for traffic violations, offenses that would be handled in municipal court. Rescue squads and fire departments pulled the Stephens from the water and employed life-saving measures but they were unsuccessful, authorities said. The couple was pronounced dead at Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County in Willingboro. Anyone who witnessed the collision can call the Burlington County Central Communications at 609-265-7113.
