TRENTON » A 29-year-old man was shot once, possibly in the chest, Thursday afternoon behind a restaurant on Brunswick Avenue, witnesses and cops said.

The shooting happened inside a residence behind the PJ African Special on the 700 block of Brunswick Avenue, police spokesman Lt. Rolando Ramos said.

The man, who has not been identified, was shot once and taken to Capital Medical Regional Health Center, which was literally within walking distance, on Fuld Street. He is expected to survive, Ramos said.

Witnesses on scene described seeing a man taken away on a gurney. No one heard shots or claimed to have seen the shooting go down. But people flocked outside of their homes and businesses in the area taking in the scene as cops worked to process it.

Police cruisers partially blocked one lane of traffic at the intersection of Brunswick and Hillside Avenue. Further up the road, at Phillips Avenue, cops had roped off a section of the road that stretched to Fuld Street.

Cops focused their attention on the front of the PJ African restaurant.

A woman who was with a friend taping the scene on her phone said they were lucky they stopped at a nearby store and didn’t get caught in the crossfire.

“If we would have kept walking, we would have been in the middle of it,” Alene Natale said.

Ramos, who was still out at the scene when he was reached by phone, said he would have more information later in the day.
