Whited among Trenton Softball HoF inductees

An accomplish­ed athlete out of Hightstown, Eric Whited will be among this year’s inductees at the annual Trenton Softball Hall of Fame banquet.

A high-average hitter with plenty of power and a strong arm, Whited had a long and distinguis­hed career on both the league and tournament levels.

He was with many teams that won Mercer County Park Commission Leagues including Ferrrara Pasta, Damiano Roofing, Mercer Safe & Lock, Princeton Mortgage, Mannino’s and New Hanover.

His many successful tourney teams included Liedtka Fuel, Gandy Realty, ROK, Villeco Menu, the Gamecocks and Cray Electric.

Whited received many individual honors as well. He was named to a multitude of all tourney teams and was the MVP two years in a row in the Mercer American League as well as the Hamilton A League where he played fur teams such as Denny’s Diamonds and Air Care.

In short, he was a key contributo­r with some of the best teams the area and state ever produced and a constant figure on many winning teams in the 24-year history of The Trentonian Tournament.

The Hightstown standout also played in many world softball tournament­s in locales such as New Mexico and Texas.

The banquet will be held on the Sunday of April 22 at Stone Terrace in Hamilton Township. Tickets cost $60 and can be purchased in advance by calling Artie Kearns at 609-771-6143 or Tom DeVito at 732-431-1346.

The men’s inductees are Mike Coryell, George McVaugh

Nick Martini, Whited and John “Bing” Young (player/manager). Joining the hall in the women’s division are Nicole Arias, Chris Buck and Alicia Sanchez.

Other inductees include Chip Slocum in the sponsorshi­p division, Charlie Radvany (special achievemen­t ) and umpire J.R. Adubato.

Scholarshi­p winners this year are softball players Julia Martine (Hamilton), Carli Backlund, (Steinert), Kate Hunter (Robbinsvil­le) and Hailee Jantorno (Notre Dame) along with baseball players Andrew Blake (Hopewell Valley) and Nicholas Houghton (Nottingham).
