G-Men release veteran wide receiver Marshall
Brandon Marshall’s abysmal one-year run with the Giants has come to an end.
New York released the veteran wide receiver Thursday afternoon, general manager Dave Gettleman confirmed during a pre-draft press conference.
Gettleman said Marshall produced a “failed physical,” which explains why the Giants wiped their hands clean of Marshall now rather than at the start of free agency in March.
Marshall, 34, signed a two-year deal with the Giants 13 months ago. Despite compiling more than 12,000 career receiving yards in his first 11 seasons in the league up until that point, Marshall never struck a rhythm with quarterback Eli Manning. He recorded only 18 catches for 154 yards before suffering a seasonending ankle injury in Week 5.
By cutting Marshall, the Giants saved $5.16 million in cap space, according to Over The Cap. They lost only $1 million in dead money. New York has approximately $10 million in cap space available with five months until the 2018 season starts.
Asked Thursday whether the Giants have interest in signing Dez Bryant, Gettleman told reporters: “I have interest in everybody. We’ll do our film work and you never know.”
According to Mickey Spagnola of DallasCowboys.com, shortly after the Cowboys released Bryant last Friday, the former All-Pro told members of the organization he would see them “twice this year” in a bitter exit, implying he would sign with an NFC East team.
Bryant had 69 catches for 838 yards and six touchdowns for Dallas in 2017. He had a base salary of $13 million, but his value has since dropped. Bryant is still only 29 but has not recorded 1,000 yards in a season since 2014.
