BORDENTOWN » Kyle Marchetti’s adrenalin was high Thursday, and that was great news for the Bordentown High baseball team.

The junior right-handed pitcher was pumped for his battle with Delran and its senior right-handed ace Luke Smith.

Besides taking a no-hitter into the fifth inning, Marchetti showed how hyped he was by unloading a solo home run over the left-center field fence in the bottom of the sixth to help the Scotties hold on for a 4-2 win.

“It felt great,” Marchetti said. “All my adrenalin was pumping through me. To homer and get the extra run meant everything in the last inning.”

Everything about Marchetti’s game was important to coach Chris Glenn’s team, who improved to 9-0 overall and 4-0 in the Burlington County Scholastic League Patriot Division.

“He pitched a good game,” said Smith, who, like Marchetti, went the distance. “In the beginning of the game, he was locating very well away, which was important because the umpire was giving him the outside corner.”

As a result, Marchetti only allowed one other base runner (Chris Francis reached on a dropped popup) before Kris Giangreco beat out an infield single with two outs in the fifth.

Despite Marchetti’s early dominance, the Bears had started to get to him in the sixth by loading the bases with one out on consecutive singles by R.J. Moten, Alex Madera and Smith. Marchetti settled in and escaped with only one run when Jonas Baker grounded out to plate Moten.

Before coach Rich Bender’s team got another shot at Marchetti, he extended his team’s lead with a big swing after Smith had had him offbalance in his first two at-bats with a strikeout and a grounder back to the mound.

“This was not our best game,” St. Joseph’s University-bound Smith said of the game played in chilly temperatures and an off-and-on rainstorm. “We’ll learn from this.”

The visitors gave the Bordentown pitcher one more jolt in the seventh when Louis Rossner led off with a single off the third-base bag, and Giangreco followed with his second single. Pinch hitter Tyler Leroy then roped a double to center field, which plated Rossner to trim the lead to two.

With the tying runs in scoring position and none out, Scotties pitching coach Mike Oliver visited the mound for a second time in as many innings.

“Coach told me, ‘You’re the best player on the field. It’s time for you to prove it,’” Marchetti remembered.

It was the adrenalin boost Marchetti’s mind needed as he settled in to get Francis to pop out before striking out Moten and getting Madera to ground out to end the game. DELRAN
