Parker would like a warm but not hot day
As if the swearing in of the city’s first openly gay mayor elected by a diverse electorate is not news enough.
Mayor-elect Reed Gusciora, seven city council members and guests in attendance at City Hall will remember this July 1, 2018 inauguration for a weather forecast that expects temperatures to reach 100 degrees.
Elected candidates should consider pool parties as Friday starts a predicted six consecutive days of temps reaching 90 degrees or higher.
Michael Drago, a West Trenton resident who exchanges political and social barbs with me at the Trenton Transit Center during his early-morning commute, had enough time to talk about the weather.
“Yeah, I saw. Really hot. Maybe we should tell Reed that the heat is on,” Drago quipped. Ahhh, sunrise humor.
Hot weather has always been a personal favorite although those days picking blueberries, strawberries, tomatoes, peaches and other vegetables or fruits were never popular for this young field hand.
The days started wet as rows of tomatoes or blueberries were covered in earlymorning dew. By noon, we baked under a relentless sun that turned our skin from brown to an almost blackishblue sheen. Loved the summer color but not the heat.
Never realized that working under those conditions, rising every morning and knowing that most of the money earned went into the family coffer, served as precursors for productive work habits.
Summer heat ranks as better than winter cold but one should figure that any weather felt or cursed means you still exist in the land of living.
Love the excitement of an approaching nor’easter or some predicted snow storm that actually occurs. Watching snow fall, especially with a significant other as we sip tea or coffee? Chili or stew simmering in a crock pot? Wow.
Don’t do bitter cold well. So, put me down for a climate that reaches low 80s in the summer and above freezing for the winter.
Still undecided about attending the inauguration as the woman friend suggested we head to the beach. Love the ocean, sand, surf and all foods available at Asbury Park or Ocean City. Why do French fries and pizza taste better at the Jersey Shore?
My seersucker suit has been whispering for a day out as Trenton revs hope and revitalization with a new administration.
As Reggie Hammond (Eddie Murphy) alerts in the popular movie “48 Hours”, “There’s a new (mayor) in town and his name is Reed Gusciora. Y’all be cool. Right on.”
Stay cool and hydrated. Take care of your pets and look in on your elderly friends.
