Run Defense
The Giants’ defense, which allowed the sixthmost rushing yards per game last season (120.8), got off to a rousing start in that department in the preseason opener.
The Giants held Carlos Hyde, Nick Chubb and the Browns to 50 yards on 33 carries. The first-team defense yielded four yards on five carries in three drives.
Now New York draws running back Theo Riddick and the Lions, and while it’s still only the preseason, two consecutive strong performances would be an important step for new coordinator James Bettcher’s defense.
The only key player who will likely miss Friday’s game is backup outside linebacker Connor Barwin, who missed practice time with an undisclosed injury.
Within the front seven, fans should also key a close eye on rookie outside linebacker Lorenzo Carter, who has flashed his pass-rushing potential this summer. Inside linebacker Alec Ogletree will be looking to bounce back after struggling in coverage on a 36yard touchdown by Browns tight end David Njoku. pass interference 24 yards downfield on one play, followed immediately by an interception returned for a 70-yard touchdown. He also surrendered a catch to Chris Lacy in the back of the end zone where Apple failed to turn his head and locate the ball — a lingering issue during his first two seasons.
Apple will likely match up with wide receiver Marvin Jones, who recorded 1,101 yards last season, for most of his snaps Friday night. The Giants have shown faith and given him a clean slate entering his third season, so the second preseason game will offer another glimpse into Apple’s progress.
Free safety Curtis Riley is slated to make his first start after missing the opener. Darian Thompson has been out with a hamstring injury this week. can be more competent now that he isn’t responsible for protecting Eli Manning’s blindside.
Lions defensive end Ziggy Ansah compiled three sacks while maneuvering Flowers in Week 2 last season, according to Pro Football Focus.
Also of note, the Giants’ offense will likely not have running back Saquon Barkley, whom was held out of practices in Detroit with a hamstring strain suffered Monday. Expect secondyear pro Wayne Gallman, along with veteran Jonathan Stewart, to get an opportunity to steer the rushing attack with the firstteam offense.
