Rut­gers coach Stringer one win from 1,000

PIS­CAT­AWAY >> Rut­gers women’s bas­ket­ball coach C. Vi­vian Stringer is on the brink of his­tory.

Charise Wil­son scored 14 points, Noga Pe­leg Pelc added 11 and the Scar­let Knights gave Stringer her 999th ca­reer vic­tory with a 61-47 win over Stony Brook on Fri­day af­ter­noon.

Stringer has a 999-402 ca­reer record and is likely to join the ex­clu­sive 1,000 club on Tues­day when Rut­gers (2-0) hosts Cen­tral Con­necti­cut State.

“I’m try­ing to com­part­men­tal­ize,” Stringer said in her postgame press con­fer­ence. “I’m ex­cited be­cause op­por­tu­ni­ties like this for most peo­ple don’t come at all.”

The Knights held Stony Brook (01) to 30.8 per­cent shoot­ing, which helped off­set 23 turnovers.
