In response to the Back Talk writer inquiring about Mercer County’s Veterans Day ceremony, for as far back as anyone can recall Mercer County Veteran Services has conducted a Veterans Day service every year, including this year. For at least the past 13 years Veterans Day was marked at a ceremony at the Catholic War Veterans Post 417 on Grand Street in Trenton. Because Post 417 is undergoing repairs, this year VFW Post 3525 on Christine Avenue in Hamilton was gracious enough to host the ceremony followed by a luncheon. More than 100 people were in attendance including County Executive Brian Hughes, Mercer freeholders, Sen. Linda Greenstein, Assemblyman Dan Benson; Surrogate Diane Gerofsky, Hamilton council representatives and others. The day’s speaker was Lt. Col. Donald Weyler.

I can’t speak for all the municipalities but I am aware that the state conducted an event at the Armory in Lawrence, Ewing conducted a ceremony at Lt. George Betor Park, and Lawrence held a ceremony at Veterans Park. The events are all publicized and usually found on the town websites and calendars of events. Citizens of all ages are encouraged to engage with their local governments; participation is warmly welcomed. Mercer County will mark Pearl Harbor Day on Sunday, December 2, also at Post 3525. We invite the Back Talk writer to take a seat at the table on that day and join fellow county residents in honoring those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.
