Eagles in the playoffs? Not likely

- Jeff Edelstein

Fly, Eagles, fly! Right into the ground.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the Birds aren’t going to get a chance to repeat their legit thrilling Super Bowl victory of a year ago. Odds are stacked. In fact, as we sit here today, the Eagles have a 28 percent chance of sneaking in the playoffs, according to 538. com, who, I guess I should be note, gave Clinton an 80 percent chance of beating Trump, so, yeah.

But still: Nope. Let’s work backwards, shall we?

WEEK 17: At Washington. I don’t care if Butt Sanchez is the QB, winning on the road, in the division, in December is not easy. If this is a do-or-die game (it won’t be) then I guess you can pin your hopes on the Eagles rising to the moment, but still, all things being equal, what would they be, maybe 3 point favorites? Maybe?

WEEK 16: Home against the Texans, who if they beat the Colts at home this week, would bring a 10game winning streak into Philadelphia. If everything was breaking right, maybe the game would pick ‘em. A tough matchup, period.

WEEK 15: At the Rams. Just stop it. Jared Goff might throw for 700 in the first half.

WEEK 14: At Dallas. Really, those last three games up above are pretty meaningless if the Eagles don’t beat the resurgent Cowboys, in Dallas. Can they do it? Sure. Is it likely? Not according to Vegas, who have installed the Cowboys as -3.5 favorites. And if the Eagles lose, their playoff chances drop to 8 percent.

Best case scenario is a 4-0 finish, and while 538. com doesn’t go out that far, even beating the Cowboys, Rams, and Texans still leaves the Eagles room to blow it in D.C.

Is it possible? Yeah. Is it likely? Nope.

In short: Bye, Eagles, bye.
