-

John A. Owens, Jr., 91, of Hamilton, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 3, 2018.

Born in Trenton, he was a lifelong area resident. Mr. Owens attended St. Joseph’s Grammar School. While in grammar school, he was awarded a Junior Lifeguard Certificate by the Red Cross. As a young man, he served in the United States Army as a truck driver. Shortly after his discharge from the Army, he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served on active duty and in the Naval Reserves for over five years. Despite his service in both the Army and the Navy, he always considered himself a Navy man. He worked as a truck driver for Sloans Blabin Linoleum in Hamilton. He then was hired as a civilian employee, an electrician, for the Naval Air Propulsion Test Center in West Trenton. He retired from the Test Center after 35 years. It was during this employment that he received a diploma in electrical maintenance from the School of Industrial Arts in Trenton. Mr. Owens was a member of the American Legion Post 458 and the Hamilton Elks. He enjoyed watching sports, especially the Phillies and the Eagles, and dancing with his favorite partner, his beloved wife Jean, at the Elks, the American Legion, Catholic War Veterans, and especially during their “Polka Weekends.” Many Hamilton residents recognized Mr. Owens and his wife as “that couple I see walking every morning.” He especially loved spending time with his family and he treasured his memories of vacations with his wife and daughters in Walt Disney World. Throughout most of his life, Mr. Owens was handy around the house and did all maintenance and repairs himself. His wife was his best and favorite assistant.

Mr. Owens is predeceased by his parents, John A. and Elizabeth (Moody) Owens; his loving wife of 60 years, Jean (Bullaro) Owens; his sister, Anna Mae Owens Pitman, and his brothers, Frank, Richard and Willard Owens; he is survived by his loving daughters, Debra and Denise Owens; his son-in-law, Herman Kummler; two sisters-in-law, Jean Owens and Rita Bullaro; and numerous niece and nephews, their spouses, their children, and their grandchildren.
