Hun’s Seager, Pennington’s Gurick highlight our Prep honors
In the Prep boys basketball ranks, there was no shortage of fierce competition this season.
Hun beat Peddie twice by six points or less, Peddie beat Lawrenceville twice by seven points or less, Hun beat Lawrenceville by two points, and Pennington lost three times to Princeton Day School before knocking off the Panthers in the NJISAA Prep B Tournament.
Over at Hun, 6-foot-7 forward Andrew Seager was a matchup nightmare for arguably the area’s deepest team. The postgrad from Ocean Township averaged 14 points per game and was an exceptionally strong rebounding and passing big man, making him The Trentonian’s Prep Player of the Year.
Forwards Dylan Deveney and Eric Fleming also helped steer Hun to a 5-0 mark against local schools and an appearance in the Mid-Atlantic Prep League semifinals.
Postgrad guard Latrell Reid, a Trenton Catholic transfer, was the best player on Peddie, which knocked off Lawrenceville in the Prep A quarterfinals but ultimately saw its season end against Blair in the semifinals.
Versatile swingman Matan Zucker and sharpshooting guard Ryan Conroy guided Lawrenceville to the MAPL semifinals. Josh Hemmings also emerged for the Big Red and is receiving Division I interest from colleges.
Pat Higgins topped off a sensational career at Pennington by averaging 22.5 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.4 assists, ending his fourrun year with 1,397 points.

Coach of the Year
Bernie Gurick (Pennington) in the Prep B final, Bernie Gurick is The Trentonian’s Prep Coach of the Year. Gurick is retiring after 30 seasons, finishing his Hall of Fame career with 402 wins and seven state titles.
At Princeton Day School, guards David Coit and Freddie Young each tallied more than 400 points on the season to lead the Panthers to 12 wins. Coit, last season’s Prep Player of the Year, totaled 1,791 points in four years.
