Bernal, 22, youngest ever Tour de France champion
Egan Bernal has become the first Colombian to win the Tour de France as the three-week race ended with the 21st and final stage on the Champs-Elysees.
At 22, Bernal is the youngest Tour winner in the postWorld War II era.
“I cannot believe it. It’s just incredible. I am sorry. I have no words,” Bernal said through a translator. “I still can’t understand what is happening to me.”
Bernal succeeded Ineos teammate Geraint Thomas as the British outfit posted a seventh Tour victory with a fourth different rider in eight years.
MEN’S GOLF: KOEPKA OUTDUELS MCILROY >> Brooks Koepka had three birdies in a fourhole stretch on the front nine and cruised to a three-stroke victory in the FedEx St. Jude Invitational for his first World Golf Championships title.
Playing with Rory McIlroy in their first final-group pairing, the top-ranked Koepka closed with a bogey-free 5-under 65 at TPC Southwind for his seventh PGA Tour title. He finished at 16-under 264.
McIlroy followed his thirdround 62 with a 71 to drop into a tie for fourth at 11 under. WOMEN’S GOLF: JIN YOUNG KO CAPTURES EVIAN MAJOR >> Jin Young Ko clinched her second major title of the season, firing a final round 4-under 67 in the rain to win the Evian Championship by two shots with a 15-under total of 269.
