Lawrence believes it has the pitching to go deep
If the Lawrence Little League All-Stars are going to win the District-12 Tournament, it will be because of pitching.
When manager Mike Crowley looks at his group, he sees several hurlers who can take the ball on any given day.
“We’ve got the best pitching that we’ve ever had,” Crowley said. “A couple of the boys have developed into real solid pitchers. I think they’ll be low-scoring games.”
In fact, when Crowley looks around the other teams vying for the district title, he notices strong pitching everywhere.
“We’re going to be facing great pitching,” Crowley said. “This is it for the summer. You could be playing back-to-backto-back. You don’t just need one or two great pitchers, you need several pitchers. We feel pretty good about the pitching staff. There are a lot of great pitchers out there and I think there will be a lot of fast-moving ballgames because of the pitching.”
The eight-team double elimination tournament, which was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, is scheduled to get underway on Friday with two games at Sunnybrae LL and two at Nottingham LL. All games after Friday’s opening round will be held at Sunnybrae, with the championship round set to begin on Saturday, Sept. 12.
Lawrence opens against host Sunnybrae at 8:15 p.m. on Friday night.
“(The kids) have been focused through the summer,” Crowley said. “They couldn’t wait to get outside. We’re comfortable with everything happening outside. They’ve been playing travel ball all summer.”
