CVC coaches hand out end-of-season awards
The basketball coaches of the Colonial Valley Conference were happy to get to coach their players again this season, and they were equally ecstatic to get to pick the best of the bunch to honor as their All-CVC picks.
However, for the second year in a row, those coaches, players and their families will not be able to have their traditional endof-season banquet because of the coronavirus pandemic.
After dealing with a similar situation when the 201920 campaign was cut short by the virus, the CVC Basketball Association Board came up with a plan to present the players with commemorative shirts and certificates with each player’s name and the team to which he or she was selected.
The league’s boys’ and girls’ basketball coaches picked first-, second- and third-team all-stars, as well as honorable mention, for their sport. They also chose a Player and Coach of the Year for each.
On the boys’ side, Nottingham, Robbinsville and Trenton High each had two first-team selections. Donavin Crawford and Bran- don Raba represented the Northstars. Brian Herbert and Ryan Smith were the Ravens’ picks. Davontay Hutson and Dawonne Wells were chosen from the Tor- nadoes. Raba was named as Player of the Year, while Allentown’s Walter Kelly was selected as Coach of the Year.
On the girls’ side, Ewing High’s freshman tandem
of Joi Johnson and Rhian Stokes led the firstteam list. They were joined by Hopewell Valley senior Franki Gomez, Notre Dame senior Madison McCauley, Robbinsville junior Vanessa Sabol and Allentown sophomore Kayla McCrea. Gomez was named as Player of the Year, while Ewing’s Dan Montferrat was selected as Coach of the Year.
Without the CVC banquet or the Mercer County Tournament this winter, the coaches also took the time to announce the Christian Somma Courage Award winners. Those awards will be presented to Allentown’s Justin Marcario and Ewing’s Chimia Bethea.
