Vaccine plan at Rutgers isn’t great, and mask policy is worse

So while I think you’re a fool to not get vaccinated against the coronavirus, I also think it’s your choice. This falls under my general umbrella when it comes to life: As long as you’re not hurting someone else, do whatever you want. (I dabble in light Libertarianism.)

And as far as science can see, if I’m vaccinated, then I really don’t have to worry about you. I might still catch the coronavirus from your unvaccinated idiocy, but thanks to the vaccine, the chances of me being hospitalized with COVID-19, never mind dying from it, are solidly in the slim-to-none range.

So yes. I can’t imagine for one second why someone wouldn’t want to be vaccinated against a virus that might kill them, but whatever. Your choice.

But not everyone agrees with me. Like the braintrust at Rutgers University, which decreed Thursday that if you’re a student, and if you want to come to class in the fall, you must be vaccinated, becoming the first major university in America to do so.

And thus begins the Great COVID Vaccine War.

Rutgers University motto “We Make The NCAA Tourney Every Few Decades” - has simply mandated that students returning to campus in the autumn be vaccinated against the coronavirus. Exceptions will be made for students with medical and/or religious issues.

Obviously, we can see where this is headed (besides the courts): A certain number of students will all of a sudden find religion in an effort to not be forced to vaccinate themselves. That’ll be fun.

Also fun: Seeing what other colleges and universities do. And what private enterprise does. And what public enterprise does. If I were a betting man - and I am - I would bet that “proof of vaccine” is going to become a thing. No business well, maybe except for that gym down in Bellmawr wants to be the scene of a superspreader event.

But again: I’m not exactly on board with the idea. I’d sure like to see everyone vaccinated, but I’d also like to see rainbows shoot out of my butt when I fart. You just can’t have everything in his life.

The worst part about Rutgers’ plan, however, is this: Masks and social distancing will still be mandated. Now, we’re going from “gosh, I don’t know if forcing everyone to be vaccinated is the right move” to “wait a second, you morons, if we’re all vaccinated, what’s with the freaking masks and distancing?”

It’s - and this is a word I’ve sure been using a lot lately - stupid.

Again, defaulting to science here: If you’re vaccinated and I’m vaccinated, we can safely hang out together indoors. We can safely eat off each other’s plate in an unventilated room. We can safely try to coax rainbows out of each other’s hine ends while wearing full unicorn costumes (if that’s what you’re into, no judgements here). In short: If you’re vaccinated and I’m vaccinated, everything is AOK.

So …

So attention to all other universities, businesses, and anyone else: You want to mandate vaccines? I understand, but don’t really agree. But if you’re going to make sure everyone is jabbed before they visit your jawn*, then for the love of Fauci don’t force them to wear a mask and stay six feet away from each other. Without trying to be juvenile here (unlike my rainbow farts) this is the equivalent of someone getting a vasectomy and then mandating their partner be on the pill.

(*First time I’ve ever used the word “jawn” in print. I feel like I should get a free cheesesteak.)
