Assault on Voting Rights

-

Republican controlled legislatures in the “battleground” states of Florida, Arizona, Georgia and Texas, have begun efforts to limit voting procedures. An Arizona state lawmaker is on record as saying “everybody shouldn’t be voting”. Joe Biden won the presidency in large measure because African Americans turned out in record numbers to vote for him. Voting procedures such as early voting, absentee voting, mail-in voting, and increased drop-off mail boxes helped to increase voting access. Now the states listed are introducing legislation to roll back easy access and deter African Americans from voting. This is nothing more than racially targeted voter suppression efforts. Throughout the country there are at least 250 local or state bills considered or passed to curb access to the polls. Donald Trump has stated that Republicans cannot return to power in 2022 and/or 2024 unless this effort is successful. This regresses Democracy back to the civil rights atrocities of the 1950’s and 1960’s.

U.S. Senate Democrats have introduced a sweeping voting rights bill (H.R. 1) to fight GOP restrictions on voting access. Grass roots support is needed once again to fight this racist assault on voting rights. — Ed Vreeswyk, Yardville

Every lawmaker trying to regulate elections in any way needs to go with one single test before launching an initiative. Will this law or rule make it harder for an American citizen to vote? If the answer is yes, rethink your approach.
