New Jersey Globe boss praises The Trentonian’s ‘extraordinary’ news coverage

- Trentonian Staff Report

TRENTON » A New Jersey political insider is loving The Trentonian’s recent news coverage.

“You’ve been doing some extraordinary journalism in Trenton and in Mercer County,” David Wildstein, editor-in-chief of the New Jersey Globe, said Saturday of this newspaper in his Power Hour podcast. “I’m sure there’s some people who don’t like what you write, but they’re not supposed to like it, right, if you’re doing your job.”

Trentonian staff writer Isaac Avilucea appeared on Wildstein’s 77 WABC show this weekend as a guest, where he talked about Mercer

County Executive Brian Hughes’ infamous encounter with Pennsylvania State Police last summer, among other matters.

Hughes, a Democratic powerbroker, has had numerous driving gaffes over the last two decades. His administration also belatedly informed the public about how two Nigerian nationals fleeced $660,000 from the county government in 2019 after The Trentonian raised questions about it earlier this year.

Avilucea talked about those controversies during his appearance on the New Jersey Globe’s Power Hour podcast with Wildstein and said The Trentonian investigates all public officials in the Greater Trenton area regardless of party affiliation.

“We’re not partisan,” Avilucea said. “We’ll cover Democrats. We’ll cover Republicans, independents.

Parties protect politicians. Newspapers expose politicians.”

Wildstein, a long-time Garden State political news junkie, previously worked

at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey as a Gov. Chris Christie appointee and admitted his role in the so-called Bridgegate scandal.

Wildstein’s 10-minute, 30-second interview with Avilucea has been aired and published online at wabcradio.com/podcast/new-jersey-globe-power-hour.
