Bike safety is top priority for East Windsor’s Bike Month
EAST WINDSOR » It’s officially bike month in town, as Mayor Janice Mironov — along with township police officers — proclaimed May as “National Bike Month” and officially kicked off the “Use Your Head” safety program which will see free bicycle helmets handed out to residents under the age of 16.
Two giveaways have already occurred, with the final one happening on Wednesday, May 25, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the East Windsor municipal building (16 Lanning Boulevard).
“We all recognize that bicycling is an effective means of transportation, an excellent form of recreation, a tool for fitness and promoting a healthy lifestyle, and a means for promoting a cleaner environment,” Mironov said by way of proclamation, according to a press release. “East Windsor reaffirms our goal to promote the safe use of the bicycle, and to develop and expand programs to improve New Jersey’s bicycling environment and opportunities for bicycling. With an abundance of parks, trails and green spaces, East Windsor is the ideal place to enjoy biking individually or with family or friends.”
Phase 2 of the bicycle safety program will run from June 1 through July 31, in which the mayor, council, and police officers will hand out “summonses” to young people, recognizing children wearing helmets and asking them to sign a pledge to use a safety helmet when using a bicycle, skateboard or rollerblades.
The kids will then be entered into a drawing for prizes, which will take place on Tuesday August 2 at the township National Night Out event.
