Rider to open at Providence; continue series vs. Monmouth
The Rider men’s basketball team’s non-conference schedule features three games against NCAA Tournament participants, an international trip and the continuation of a series against a former MAAC rival.
Coach Kevin Baggett’s club opens the season at Providence on Nov. 7 in the the first of three games against teams that qualified for the NCAA Tournament a season ago. The Broncs also travel to Rutgers on Nov. 22 — a game that has been scrapped by Covid in each of the last two seasons — and host Delaware on Dec. 19.
The Broncs travel abroad for a pair of games in Dublin, Ireland as part of the MAAC/ASun Challenge on Nov. 18 and 19 against Central Arkansas and Stetson.
Former MAAC rival Monmouth, now in the CAA, visits Alumni Gymnasium on Nov. 30. The Broncs and Hawks split the regularseason meetings last season before Monmouth captured a close victory in the semifinals of the MAAC Tournament in Atlantic City.
The non-conference schedule wraps up on Dec. 30 at Georgia in a homecoming for graduate student Dwight Murray Jr. The star guard grew up in Austell, Ga., about an hour and a half away from Georgia’s campus in Athens.
The home opener is set for Nov. 12 against The College of New Jersey. The MAAC is now permitting teams to schedule games against sub-Division I competition. The other non-league contest has the Broncs travelling to Easton, Mass., to face DI newbie Stonehill of the NEC.
The MAAC slate will be released at a later date and is likely to include at least one game in December.
Rider is coming off a 14-19 season, although it reached the semifinals of the MAAC Tournament for the first time in 10 years, and returns four of five starters.
