TRENTON >> A little over a month ago, former Trenton Mayor Doug Palmer announced he was considering running for Mercer County Executive. Monday at Trenton Social surrounded by activists, community leaders, and more, Palmer announced his endorsement of Assemblyman Dan Benson for the same position.

Originally, Palmer thought about running to restore hope for a better future in Trenton.

“I announced I was contemplating running for County Executive to use this powerful office to work with Trenton and Mercer County to change this narrative. I believe a strong, vibrant Trenton, makes a strong, vibrant Mercer County.” Palmer said met with applause.

So what changed? According to Palmer, it was Benson’s “commitment and passion.”

After multiple conversations, Palmer realized he and Benson were looking to do the same thing and that is making Trenton the focal point of the county to bring about economic change.

“I believe I’m in the best position to work with him as a strong advocate to build hope and opportunity for the people of Trenton and Mercer County,” Palmer said. “Dan Benson represents a new era of leadership and the passion and the focus to get the job done. If you were excited about supporting me, I ask that you transfer that excitement to Dan Benson.”

Benson took the podium to thank Palmer for what he called “not just an endorsement of words, but a commitment to action and a partnership for the months and years to come.”

The Assemblyman continued by assuring the crowd he is ready to embrace the challenges ahead of him, promising to bring equity, transparency, and responsiveness to the Capital County if elected County Executive.

“Trenton voted for change and Mercer County must take a stronger role in partnering with our Mayor and our new County to deliver that change,” Benson said.

While Benson’s formal announcement for his run for Mercer County Executive will come Wednesday, he made a different revelation Monday. Joining as his campaign manager will be community activist, lobbyist, and civil rights leader, Jeannine Frisby LaRue.

LaRue wasted no time in assuring everyone Benson is the “real deal”.

“Now is not the time for weak knees,” LaRue added. “There is a new day in Mercer County. I’ve lived in this County for almost 20 years and there has been a whisper campaign for about six years. We need a change… We’re here to tell you today, you’re going to get that.”
