Princeton, Rutgers get at-large bids to NCAA Tournament
New Jersey will be well represented in the NCAA Women’a Soccer Tournament.
Both Princeton and Rutgers received at-large bids into the 64-team tournament when the field was announced on Monday afternoon.
The Tigers (9-5-3) finished third in the Ivy League and received a No. 7 seed. They will host 10thseeded Michigan (7-8-3) in a first-round game on Friday night at Roberts Stadium.
Princeton is 9-2 all-time in home games in the NCAA Tournament.
The winner advances to a second-round match against either secondseeded Texas Tech (15-1-4) or 15th-seeded Florida Gulf Coast (12-4-5).
Rutgers (9-6-4) was one of the bubble teams to get in after it finished sixth in the Big Ten and lost its quarterfinal tournament game to Wisconsin in a shootout. The Scarlet Knights are a No. 9 seed and face Ivy League regular-season champ Columbia (10-4-3) in New York.
The winner likely has a trip to top-seeded Clemson (15-3-3) so long as it avoids an upset against 16thseeded Radford (12-5-2).
In Division III, The College of New Jersey is back in the 64-team field after a one-year hiatus and will host first and second round matches on Saturday and Sunday.
Dan Blank’s Lions (152-3) were drawn against Johnson & Wales (17-2-3) in the first round. The other game in the pod pits Tufts (7-5-4) against Franklin & Marshall (12-3-4).
The 15th-ranked Lions claimed the NJAC’s automatic qualifier with a 2-0 victory over Rowan on a pair of goals by Victoria D’Imperio. It was the 21st NJAC title in program history.
Rowan (14-1-2) got an atlarge bid and faces Southern Maine (15-1-4) in a firstround game played on the campus of MIT.
