Nottingham survives on Miller’s late putback
HAMILTON >> The Nottingham High boys basketball got a close shave in the opening round of the Central Group III playoffs.
But survive and advance the Northstars did.
Jahmere Miller scored the last two of his team-high 20 points on a banker from six feet with 21 seconds remaining and second-seeded Nottingham survived an upset bid from 15th-seeded Brick Memorial with a 52-50 victory in the first round on Thursday night.
Jordan Raba finished with 10 points for the Northstars (21-6), who host either Freehold Borough or Matawan in the quarterfinals.
Brick Memorial (9-15) had a 3-pointer to win at the buzzer but it was off the mark.
ROBBINSVILLE 61, SOMERVILLE 42 ROBBINSVILLE >>
The eighthseeded Ravens (18-9) jumped out to a nine-point lead by the end of the first quarter against the ninth-seeded Pioneers (12-15) and then pulled away in the second half.
The Bunnell brothers combined for 36 points. Tyler scored a team-best 19 and Evan added 17 for Robbinsville, which faces top-seeded Red Bank Regional in the quarterfinals.
Brady Scheier netted 11 of his game-high 20 points from the free throw line for Somerville. Quinn Carran added 15 points.
BURLINGTON TWP. 57, HAMILTON WEST 50 BURLINGTON >>
The 14thseeded Hornets (8-18) took the third-seeded Falcons (216) to overtime in their bid for an upset, but were outscored, 8-1, in the extra session.
Aaron Ferguson scored 16 points, Irving Singletary added 14 and Aharon Satchell had 12 for Township, which hosts sixth-seeded Ewing in the quarterfinals after the Blue Devils erased a seven-point halftime deficit to win by 12 over 11th-seeded Middletown North.
Hass Cannon netted a game-best 24 points and Devyn Wright-Myles added 13 for Hamilton.
