Capital Health doctors lead innovation and expanded services
With a mission to improve the health and well-being of communities in Mercer County and surrounding areas, Capital Health physicians continue to improve access to a comprehensive range of health care services highlighted by the latest treatment options and innovative research.
Capital Institute for Neurosciences has long advanced neurologic care for patients in the region with hospital-based services at Capital Health Medical Center — Hopewell and Capital Health Regional Medical Center (RMC), home to the only comprehensive stroke center in the region certified by The Joint Commission.
Lawrenceville Neurology Center, a respected practice in Mercer County since 1981, recently joined the Institute, adding offices in Lawrenceville and Princeton to give residents in the region greater access to a team with certifications and training in areas of specialization such as neurophysiology, vascular neurology, epilepsy, neuromuscular disorders, and multiple sclerosis.
Physicians at Capital Health Cancer Center combine world-class expertise with innovative research to deliver the latest advances in cancer care. Capital Health Medical Center — Hopewell is now an NCI Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP) affiliate site of the Atlantic Health Cancer Consortium (AHCC).
As a participating site, Capital Health Cancer Center offers residents in the greater Mercer County region access to new and innovative clinical trials
and studies that are available at top national institutions. The Cancer Center also contributes to NCORP’s national network of research in cancer prevention, screening, and treatment, especially regarding access to care among underserved populations.
The National Institutes of Health awarded a grant of more than $400,000 to researchers from the Cancer Center and research partner JBS Scientific Inc. to support a study to determine if a simple urinary test can replace uppertract
imaging and endoscopic procedures for initial bladder cancer detection. The study could pave the way for a more precise method of detection that puts much less of a burden on patients who are facing a possible cancer diagnosis.
As part of their growing full-service cardiac program, specialists from Capital Health Heart and Vascular Institute and Capital Health Cardiology Specialists perform transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), Watchman implants
and next-generation leadless pacemaker implant procedures at RMC in Trenton.
These minimally invasive procedures are for certain patients who are experiencing structural or electrophysiological issues of the heart. Physicians from our Structural Heart Program use the TAVR procedure to treat patients with severe narrowing of the aortic valve opening or those with a failing surgical aortic valve who are at elevated risk for complications during open surgery. An artificial
valve is delivered to the heart through a catheter that is inserted into one of several possible access routes and placed into the diseased valve.
Physicians from Capital Health’s Cardiac Electrophysiology Program implant the Watchman device in people with atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm) not caused by a heart valve problem. This one-time procedure for appropriate patients prevents blood clots from forming in the heart and reduces the patient’s lifetime risk of stroke.
The Cardiac Electrophysiology team also performs leadless pacemaker implants that are placed directly into the heart’s right ventricle, representing the latest advance in cardiac arrhythmia therapy.
