CHAMPS LEAGUE: BARCA, ATLETICO MADRID STRIKE FIRST

Raphinha scored twice and substitute Andreas Christense­n headed the winner as Barcelona won 3-2at Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfin­als on Wednesday. Christense­n met a corner and stooped to head past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma in the 77th minute. Raphinha opened the scoring in the 37th and Ousmane Dembélé equalized in the 48th against his former club. Three minutes later, midfielder Vitinha put PSG ahead in a pulsating match where Dembélé hit the left post moments before Christense­n’s goal. In Madrid, Atletico moved closer to returning to the semifinals with a 2-1 win over Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of the quarterfin­als.

Atletico took a first-half lead with goals by Rodrigo De Paul and Samuel Lino and outplayed Dortmund during most of the match, but the German team stayed alive thanks to a late goal by substitute Sébastien Haller.

Men’s College Basketball: Arkansas hires Calipari >>

Arkansas hired John Calipari as men’s basketball coach, a day after the Hall of Fame coach stepped down from the Kentucky program he led to the 2012NCAA championsh­ip. Calipari, 65, signed a five-year contract with an annual base salary of $7million through April 2029with a maximum of two automatic rollover years for NCAA Tournament appearance­s that would extend the contract to 2031.

Calipari replaces Eric Musselman, who left for the job at Southern California. Calipari left the Wildcats after going 410-123in 15years, including 23-10this past season. But the past few campaigns have been disappoint­ing by Kentucky standards with a 1-3mark in its last three NCAA trips, including first-round losses to No. 14seed Oakland last month and No. 15seed Saint Peter’s two years ago.

Women’s College Basketball: Stanford coach retires >>

Tara VanDerveer, the winningest basketball coach in NCAA history, announced her retirement after 38seasons leading the Stanford women’s team and 45overall.

The 70-year-old VanDerveer surpassed Mike Krzyzewski for the wins record earlier this year. The Hall of Famer departs with 1,216victori­es at Idaho, Ohio State and Stanford.

And as has been the plan for years, top Cardinal assistant Kate Paye is set to take over the program, and the school said negotiatio­ns with Paye are underway.

NFL: Jags lock up Allen >> Standout pass rusher Josh Allen and the Jacksonvil­le Jaguars reached agreement on a five-year, $150 million contract that includes $88 million guaranteed. The deal makes Allen the third-highest-paid defensive player in the league in average salary behind San Francisco’s Nick Bosa and Kansas City’s Chris Jones.

Allen, the seventh overall pick in the 2019draft, set a singleseas­on franchise record with 17½ sacks in the final year of his rookie contract and is 10shy of the team’s career mark (55) held by Tony Brackens (1996-2003).

Olympics: Cash prizes for track & field gold medalists >> Track and field is set to become the first sport to introduce prize money at the Olympics, with World Athletics saying it would pay $50,000to gold medalists in Paris. The governing body of athletics said it was setting aside $2.4million to pay the gold medalists across the 48events on the track and field program for this year’s Paris Olympics. Relay teams will split the $50,000between their members. Payments for silver and bronze medalists are planned to start from the 2028Olympi­cs in Los Angeles. The prize money will come out of the share of Olympic revenue that the IOC distribute­s to World Athletics and other governing bodies of individual sports.
