Coast Union girls team gets ‘huge win’ over Morro Bay
The Coast Union High School girls basketball team continued its strong season with an upset of Morro Bay with a 44-42 win Dec. 19.
“I’m not sure when the last time was that we beat Morro Bay,” head coach Keith Stowers said. “But it was a huge win for Coast Union!”
The score was tied, 40-40, when Bella Raethke stepped to the line and made a pair of free throws to seal the win. Kaylee Ferguson had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Karis Lawson contributed 11 points and 12 rebounds. Ellie Kennedy scored nine points and hauled in nine rebounds.
It helps the confidence of the team, Stowers added, “knowing we can play better and still win a game that we fought hard to win.”
The Broncos boys basketball team was defeated 54-17 in its road game against Morro Bay Pirates on Dec. 19. Broncos head coach Gehrig Kniffen said: “It was a tough loss. We just didn’t play our best basketball, but I think we’re still moving in the right direction.”
Coast (5-5 and 2-1 in the Coast Valley League) lost its first CVL game on Dec. 14; Coastal Christian shaded the Broncos 4340. Forrest Johnson led the team with 14 points in that game.
The next boys’ home game is Jan. 7 vs. Orcutt Academy (6:30 p.m.); the girls next home game is Jan. 8 against Cuyama Valley (5 p.m.).
