Southern Mississippi decided not to hire Art Briles after interviewing the former Baylor coach, a decision Golden Eagles coach Jay Hopson disagrees with. Hopson said Briles “deserves a second chance.”

Briles, 63, led the Bears to consecutive Big 12 titles in 2013 and 2014. He was fired after an external investigation revealed in May 2016 that Baylor had for years mishandled numerous sexual assault allegations by students, including some against football players.

Former New Mexico athletic director Paul Krebs was charged with fraud and money laundering in Albuquerque. The attorney general’s office filed a criminal complaint against Krebs in connection with a 2015 golf trip to Scotland and allegations he tried to conceal a $25,000 donation.
