Man convicted in massive Medicare kickback scheme
Philip Esformes, who built an empire of skillednursing and assistedliving facilities in MiamiDade, was found guilty Friday of 20 charges, including paying bribes and kickbacks to generate streams of Medicare patients for his businesses.
Prosecutors said the wealthy Miami Beach executive billed Medicare close to $1 billion for services that patients largely didn’t need or even receive.
Esformes faced 26 charges overall in what was touted as the biggest Medicare fraud case in the country. Jurors did not reach a verdict on the main count of conspiracy.
