Man con­victed in mas­sive Medi­care kick­back scheme

Philip Es­formes, who built an em­pire of skilled­nurs­ing and as­sist­edliv­ing fa­cil­i­ties in Mi­amiDade, was found guilty Fri­day of 20 charges, in­clud­ing pay­ing bribes and kick­backs to gen­er­ate streams of Medi­care pa­tients for his busi­nesses.

Pros­e­cu­tors said the wealthy Mi­ami Beach ex­ec­u­tive billed Medi­care close to $1 bil­lion for ser­vices that pa­tients largely didn’t need or even re­ceive.

Es­formes faced 26 charges over­all in what was touted as the big­gest Medi­care fraud case in the coun­try. Jurors did not reach a ver­dict on the main count of con­spir­acy.
